Daytime/Rainy Observation

I took some time to visit the site during the day to see the street clearly in light and identify opportunities to improve night time safety perceptions for bus users and pedestrians. I knew the corridor was 6km long, but did not fully appreciate this scale in real life.
I used a personal contact who visits Dominion Road fairly often to drive me up and down the corridor during the hours of 1pm - 2pm. During this drive-through I caught sight of more "warning signs" in the form of graffiti, refuse, and an abundance of stolen road cones. Sights like these reflect upon the community and immediately create a negative perception for visitors. However I did notice a significant increase in pedestrians during the day compared to the evening.
I used these signs to identify potential hotspots - assuming these "warning signs" correlate to the amount of petty crime in an area. As expected the hotspots tended to centre around local businesses (dairys, corner shops and restaurants) and wide open spaces, but also seemed more concentrated as I got closer to the Mt Roskill end where security and patrols are less prominent.
(Suspected) Hotspots thus far:
Mt Roskill War Memorial Park
Potters Park
Side Streets
Residential Areas heading toward Mt Roskill
It was raining today too, and the lack of connecting shelter was another pressing issue for any one moving bus - shelter - shop wise. This would be a very valid opportuntity to explore if I feel addresing security & perception is not appropiate later in the project.
