Resource: "Universal Principles of Design" (W. Lidwell, K. Holden, J. Butler, 2010, Rockport Publishers)
I chose to take a look at "Universal Principles of Design" to see if I could use human centered principles to "influence how a design is percieved", and how I could "help people learn from a design". I thought looking at proven techniques could aid in my ideation by inspiring new solutions and improving/adjusting solutions I had already.
I picked out the following principles I thought may be useful for this project:
Biophillia Effect - Using rich imagery and nature environements to reduce stress and anxiety
Classical Conditioning - positive or negative stimulus with an unconscious or emotional response
i.e. sound of drink being poured or image of pain respectively
Hierarchy of Needs - Design must address lower level needs before higher level needs can be addressed (i.e safety is the second lowest level after physiological). However the theory claims higher levels have a higher perception of value.
Iconic Representation - "use of pictorial images to improve the recognition and recall of signs and control"
Immersion - creating a mental focus so intense that "awareness of the real world is lost", creating happiness and satisfaction
Operant Conditioning - "modifying behaviour by reinforcing a desired behaviour, but punishing or ignoring undesired behaviours"
