Critique Results

On Monday I presented my two initial concepts for security and safety on Dominion Road to Steve Wrenn from Auckland Transport and three AUT lecturers. Unfortunately my ideas were not communicated as well as hoped but I will reflect on this and how I can improve in a later blog post.

The concepts themselves did not recieve a positive response either - the panel did not think they matched the quality of my insights and research work. Of course there a some small glimmers of hope I can pick out of my critique but largely the response was a range of issues as follows:

Concept One:

My "SafeStop" concept was a combination of two prior solutions - a dynamic panic room within the bus stop and a community based app system that encourages locals to help provide security and assistance for those in need. Essentially somoeone in trouble could lock themselves inside a section of the bus stop with roll out smashproof glass, then use an attached smart board to contact local assitance, police, or unlock the system. The panel thought this idea was too extreme and obviously too vague with so many unknowns.

Identified Issues:

-Attacker could lock both themselves and victim inside glass panels

-Children may get locked inside

-Extremly costly and unneccessary

-Admits and showcases their is a problem with security

-Too complex with too many layers

Concept Two:

My second concept "Smart Street Furniture" was adapted from the "Responsive Street Furniture" system showcased and implemented in the UK at present. The aim of my concept was to firstly provide a security system via wireless tracking inside streetlights, monolith bus maps, audio poles and rubbish bins to help identify where a crime or kidnapping had occurred. Secondly, Responsive Furniture provides extreme users extra help when navigating the street, such as extra seating, more time crossing the road signals, and audio directions for foreigners and the blind for example as and when they need it wirelessly. The wireless function is activated via a smart phone or key fob, with preset commands set at home online. Again this was a far too complex system to propose, despite it being successfully run overseas (see link) - but either way did not fufill the identified area of saftey.

Issues:

-Did not meet security and safety issues

-Panel could not see value in the idea - is it worthwhile

-Doesn't fit in with the current low-tech state of Dominion Road

-Labor intensive to replace or retrofit every piece of furnture on Dominion Road

I will re-evaluate my communication skills, concept quality and try to pick out simple aspects of my complex solutions to develop that may stand a better chance of satisfying the clients significant focus on cost effectiveness and truly addresses security and safety,
