Following my streetlight analysis on google maps I took my solution to Robert Starling, a personal contact who has had a career in the lighting industry.
I wanted to talk to Robert firstly to get another impression of my concept, and secondly to discuss further options and issues around the technical side of my design implementation.
I aimed to come out of the meeting with a decision whether to use my light fitting to:
-create a "Mr. Bean spotlight" on the pavement in which pedestrians could jump from spot to spot and "follow the breadcrumbs" to Dominion Road from the side streets.
OR
-create a lateral spread out effect aiming to cover the identified 15m either side of the streetpole, or as much of the area as possible.
Robert was complimentary of my solution and gave the following suggestions:
-Creating both the "Mr. Bean Spotlight" high intensity effect with my original light fitting, while adding a wide low intensity light source (onto the unused front of my design) to cover as much as the footpath as possible ("there can't be too much light")
-Consider alternative cost effective lights such as compact flourescents, or Metal Halide bulbs for a distinctive bluish light
-Research into tennis court/sport lighting for other ideas
-Agreed the "dog ears" of my design could be used to block out light pollution
-Gave me an additional contact if I need more information (Bryan King Lighting)
