Below is my General Component Material List for my solution at the conclusion of this project proposal. Of course other materials will be present in the connecting devices and internal mechanisms of the fitting but I can only define the general body ones given the project time frame and my limited knowledge and expertise in technical lighting.
I referred to "Materials for Design" by Chris Lefteri to choose my materials, evaluate their properties, and get a raw cost estimate. I made my decisions alongside sample specification charts from some of Philips Outdoor Street Lighting Models as referenced previously.
All the materials are chosen with cost efficiency, aesthetic quality and outdoor durability in mind, but a few had key features that are critical to my component including:
-POM being a recyclable material with low friction properties is ideal for the throwaway component being inserted into the main body
-Aluminium's strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance is significantly useful being the material base for most of my design (shell)
-ASA is light, hardwearing and weather resistant - making the main light housing housing long lasting
-PC is used for its excellent clarity and resistance to impact + other external forces as the clear cover for the throwaway lighting components.
I also defined which type of light source I will use for each throwaway component:
12W LED (long life 50,000+ hrs, high intensity, cheap and energy efficient) Focussed Flood Light for general lighting
12 W metal halide spotlight bulb (bluish tinge, very high luminous efficiency, less efficient than LED) per for the "Mr Bean Spotlight" novelty effect. I made these decisions based on the feedback I received via the two lighting experts I consulted previously.
General Component Material and Light Fitting List
Bracket - High Pressure Die Cast Aluminium ($2 USD/kg)
Main Housing - ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) ($6 USD/kg)
Main Housing Wings - Aluminium ($2 USD/kg) with underside white reflective coating
Throwaway Illumination Component #1 - POM (Polyoxymethylene) ($3.70 USD/kg) housing, Aluminium Plating ($2 USD/kg) (Both Faces), Impact Resistant UV stabilised clear PC (Polycarbonate) ($4.50 USD/kg) with anti glare coating, includes fitted 12 W LED Floodlight Bulb
Throwaway Illumination Component #2 - POM (Polyoxymethylene) ($3.70 USD/kg) housing, Aluminium Plating ($2 USD/kg) (Unseen face), Impact Resistant UV stabilised clear PC (Polycarbonate) ($4.50 USD/kg) with anti glare coating, includes fitted 12 W Metal Halide Spotlight
Lastly I also found some useful information regarding lumen intensity, distance and beam angles that I will carry forward into my final design drawings next.
